What drew you to illustration/design? Looking at it from nowadays perspective, since: „Daddy, what can I draw?“ Do you have any formal design training? I have an exam with a main in grafic design, one semester of art and a diploma in product design. So, not exactly, but all these educations had something to do with illustration and visualisation. Where do you live? In Hamburg, Eimsbüttel. Can you describe your studio for me? My studio is at home, besides the living room. I used to have a room in a coworking space, but found out that I like best working from home. Who or what is your biggest inspiration? Other people. Seeing what others can do and how they approach certain tasks pushes me a lot and helps me finding new perspectives. How do you get the best ideas? In communicating with myself or with others. At first I have a idea of impulse, which I visualise to either look at it from the outside or to share it with others to be able to play ping-pong with it. What technique do you use? A lot of it is digitally made, but I like using the ballpen or paint with water colors. Sometimes I build objects in CAD as a base for illustrations. I think that one of my strengths lies in the combination of different media. Tell us about a favorite project you have recently completed. Portraits for an ancestral portrait gallery of the German Federal Printing Office. What would be your dream job/commission? I love Drew Struzan and I would really like to try a poster in a similar style. Who are your illustration heroes? Drew Struzan, Daniel Simon, Syd Mead, Dave Malan. Do you keep a sketch book? Rather loose papers :) What are your hobbies? Sports, good food, bikes and also my car, a little. If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Yoga teacher, gastronome, tattoo artist. If you could travel back in time, where would you go to? I would have liked to be in the USA of the late 60s. What kind of music do you listen to? Indie Folk, Classic Rock, Indie Rock. If you won the lottery, would you still work as illustrator? Definitely! Do you collect anything? Not in it´s classical sense, I only have to many bikes and sneakers.
