Lion or pug, axolotl or sloth, illustrating animals has a long tradition and is omnipresent.
Even in the first comics, stylized, humanized animals were the main protagonists. We all know them, the chattering duck, the shrewd mouse, the cheeky dog, the lazy cat and the wise owl. Children's book illustrations depicting animals with human characteristics are so common that we hardly notice that they're not in fact human, but creatures from the animal kingdom that populate the packaging designs of children's products. Realistic depictions of animals in biology books or photorealistic images of our favorites can be found on pet food packaging and in non-fiction books.
