Lively Scout’s bounding imagination and melodic colour palettes are complemented by a fantastic track record of creativity. Over 20 years in the industry have seen her as designer, creative director, copywriter and surface artist. Clients benefit from her knowledge, professionalism and can-do attitude. One glance at her portfolio will tell you that Lively Scout’s influences are wide-ranging and eclectic. From folk rock, 70s and 80s pop and dance music to artists like William Morris and Keith Haring, nostalgia and now are comfortably woven into something individual and exciting.

Approach

Lively Scout works from the middle outwards, seeking compositions that are balanced and complete. Early thumbnails are redrawn on her iPad, then strong-yet-fluid line work gives the image structure while patterns and a palette jammed with reds and pinks add energy and allure. Then, a touch of texture completes the experience.

Style

The Lively Scout style exudes enthusiasm and dynamism. Modern pop, vintage retro and the artist’s own creative vision come together to form something very graphic, very engaging and totally unique.

What led you to become an illustrator? I’ve been a graphic designer / creator for over 20 years and always drawn to the power of illustration in branding / packaging environments. Took the plunge to become an illustrator 3 years ago, starting as a side hustle, developing my style through daily personal projects to now where it has become a 50/50 split with my design work.Where did you grow up? Born in Wimbledon UK, early childhood split between UK and Hong Kong - moved to Australia in the late 80s – been here ever since.Do you have a childhood memory relating to drawing/art that you hold dear? Looking through my mum’s art college portfolio folder as a child and being amazed - always striving to match her talents.Where do you live now and what drew you there? Moved to Byron Bay area mid last year – searching for a total tree/sea change from the frenetic inner-city lifestyle that I’ve always lived.Describe your studio for us My studio is a third bedroom in our new house that looks out onto a leafy quiet suburban street where I can hear the roar of the ocean. I have a fairly tidy desk with imac / ipad setup and a giant bookcase filled with my favourite colour-coded books, trinkets and art pieces I’ve collected (or made) over the yearsDo you have a studio pet?The fabulous Mr Finch is the adorable livelyscout mascot that sleeps at my feet – his big brother ‘Scout’ was my previous work champion x.Who or What is your biggest inspiration? So many inspirations to choose from – MUSIC (mostly pre 90s), John Alcorn (designer/artist), Emilio Pucci (fashion designer), COLOUR, Nature, Women.How do you get your ideas? I spend a lot of time doodling - often leading to unexpected results. I also tend to play around with words before I start a piece which comes from my background as a Graphic Designer.What are your interests outside of illustration? Fitness / spin instructor.What is the first record you bought? Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’.What was your favourite assignment ever?LA Times was my fav with the agency to date.What would be your dream commission?Anything packaging or textile related.What is the best use of illustration you have ever seen? I’m obsessed with wearable art.What makes a good client brief? Clear objectives and open lines of communication that allow for a true collaborative experience.How much of your work is hand drawn? 99% of my illustration work is hand drawn on an ipad and then textured using digital brushes (using photoshop to clean up any niggly bits).How do you envisage illustration evolving? I think illustration will continue to evolve digitally as technology changes, however there will always be a human need for the hand drawn / tactile. I’d like to imagine that through artificial intelligence, illustration will become more accessible as a form of self-expression for those with disabilities, using mind or voice control to create.Who is your art hero? Again SO MANY – Peter Max / Keith Harring / Judy Chicago / Ken Done / Yayoi Kusama.Who is your design hero? John Alcorn / Paula Scher (to name just a few).Who is your music hero? Nina Simone / Crosby Stills & Nash / Beth Ditto.What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Show up and do the work – good things come from constant practise.If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? France / Italy.Have you any hidden talents? Teaching / mentoring.How would someone who knows you well describe you? Introverted.If you could live anywhere, where would it be? Byron Bay – I live in paradise.If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet and why?
