The nice thing about Klaus' graphic style is: you know immediately what is meant!

Klaus Meinhardt considers himself a "designing" illustrator who thinks very carefully about which style fits the content perfectly. A good idea is the be-all and end-all for him. Well-dosed humor certainly plays a role, but he always makes sure that it doesn't drift into the cartoony or gag-like. He prefers editorial illustrations or magazine or book titles. However, he is also very happy to accept portrait or caricature commissions. Klaus is a specialist for economic and financial topics, as well as for medical-anatomical areas. More recently, he is also much active in the field of health info, explanatory film, but also deals with instructions that require the staging of beautiful hands, for example, in the cosmetic field, or representations for successful crafts or for magic tricks. Also nice are gastronomic explanations in picture form, for example, refined cocktail mixing, or the preparation and cutting of fruits. He likes to make icons and vignettes and even logos. Figure development also suits him, as well as "woodcut" styles with engraved lines in a nostalgic look. Cleanliness, precision, symmetries and a lot of dedication to detail are very important to him. He loves perfect composition and precisely balanced, eye-pleasing lines and shapes. Klaus likes to use strong, optimistic colors, although he is rather a melancholic. Or precisely BECAUSE? He never comes to terms with half-baked, immature things. - Spontaneous, scribbled and with fast gesture produced he finds uninteresting. Only the calmness in the forms allows mental deepening and creates, if it succeeds well, an optical "suction effect". Klaus has become a specialist in the depiction of political and business themes. But his colorful and graphic style can also be used for advertising or medicine. As a balance to work, the Hamburg native plays guitar and composes for his "Heinz Krämer - Werner Hornig Sextet" and he enjoys cycling in the countryside. Klaus is married and has 3 children. What drew you to illustration/design? It´s F.J. Tripps fault! He illustrated books like "Robber Hotzenplotz" and "The Little Ghost". I wanted to do something like that too (and better) when I am grown up. Do you have any formal design training? In strict sense, I am a communication designer with diploma. In that time the entire school had 6 computers and there was no such thing as a web designer. I always worked illustrations into my papers during the studies. Where do you live? In a row house in Hamburg Suelldorf, surrounded by bullfinches and squirrels. Can you describe your studio for me? I work with 4 nice colleagues in a shared office space in Hamburg- Altona. What is your biggest inspiration? Unexpected pretty images and impressions in the everyday life and the aesthetics of the 60´s just before the Flower-Power time. How do you get the best ideas? Sleeping a night over it. What technique do you use? I sketch with a pencil on 40g sketch paper because you can trace well with it. Afterwards I proceed digitally with Illustrator or Photoshop. Tell us about a favorite project you have worked on. I did a lot of illustrations for a special edition of a magazine for the European Football Championship, which was great fun and I was really happy with the result. What would be your dream job/Commission? Illustrations for a book on Opera. Who are your illustration heroes? Charley Harper, Roland Topor, Atak, Konrad Klapheck, René Magritte. Do you keep a sketchbook? No, but I think I want to start one soon. What are your hobbies? Making music, riding the bike, running, football … I need a lot of escape. Reading sports books and biographies. If you were not an illustrator, what would you be? Something like train conductor. A proper job. More realistically I would probably work in a Supermarket. Who would you like to meet? Those people who keep breaking into our offices. If you could travel back in time, where would you go to? Back to the 20´s- or rather into the year 1907 and make sure that Adolf Hitler gets accepted to the art school in VIenna... What kind of music do you listen to? Hildegard Knef, Ennio Morricone and Jazz before 1970. What is the funniest thing you have ever done? I dumbfounded 3 robbers in Bozen with the truth that I did not have any money on me. If you won the lottery, would you still work as illustrator? I would start a publishing house and would only book my favorite Illustrators. If I would be part of that group, I would still be an illustrator. Do you collect anything? DVD´s with famous, historical football games. Li-Bu-Da! Do you have a favorite game? I love the Encyclopedia Game! If there is anyone out there who does too, we should get together!
