Ink drawing meets photoshop.

At the sight of this kind of city views, you immediately want to pack your bags and visit them.

Claire is a London-based illustrator. She studied at Chelsea School of Arts and later graduated from Kingston University. Claire's work is expanding- from purely architectural drawings her portfolio now includes people, food, transport & continues to grow. Claire's working process begins by drawing the pictures using nib and Indian Ink. The black & white line drawing is scanned in the computer then brought to life on Photoshop by adding a delicate and carefully chosen palette of colors. She complements her traditional ink drawings with contemporary digital color work. Claire's style is clean and fresh. She is also known as inkcities.com

What first drew you to illustration/design? Seeing the fantastic imagination in children's illustrated books. Do you have any formal design training? I have a BA in Fine Art at Kingston University, I used to make stop frame animations inspired by folks tales when I was studying. But I chose to go back to my childhood love of drawing for my work. I mostly like the paraphernalia that comes with film and photography. You live in London. What drew you there? The huge metropolis that it is. Anything goes, people do what they like and dress how they like no one bats an eyelid. Real sense of freedom, a change from where I come from; France. Where is your studio? I'm very lucky to be able to work from home. My studio is in the spare room. Who/What is your biggest inspiration? Independent product and fashion designers, craft makers. It's really stimulating seeing what people are busy making in their studios. So much creativity! How do you get your ideas? I go to galleries, the cinema, museums, book shops. I love to research online or visit independent shops. There are amazing things happening out there, it's really exciting! I walk around town too there's a lot to learn in observing. Do you collect anything? I love quirky and old toys but tin toys especially. I have quite a few but I'd love to fill a room with cabinets full them. I have a lot of old cameras too photographic and super 8 film cameras, beautiful objects. Do you keep a scrapbook? No I don't but I take a lot of pictures of anything I find interesting. I also keep aside addresses of inspiring websites, what people are making, thinking. I often refer to them all. What are your interests outside of work? I love to visit a museum. The latest I went to is the Hunterian Museum. An enormous collection of dissected animals in formaldehyde, fascinating! Tell us about a favourite project you've recently completed I recently worked with the exciting Scottish designers at Whitespace on a brochure for a large lawyer's firm. I illustrated the cities where they have offices: Edinburgh, Dubai, London, Nottingham. What would be your "dream job/commission"? I'd love to be commissioned to promote visiting the different villages/parts of London and the rest of the UK. Also advertising worldwide destinations too. Who are your art heroes? The animators Lotte Reiniger, Jan Svankmajer. I have a soft spot for Sophie Calle's work, Margaret Killgallen, Kuniyoshi. I admire a lot of outsider artists like Adolf Wolfli, the postman Cheval for their relentless dedication.
